Introduction
I
am standing for General Secretary because I believe that the Post Office Network
and many subpostmasters have reached crisis point, as has the Federation.
As
a working subpostmaster I am aware that for many of my colleagues life has
become increasingly difficult as salaries have reduced with falling business,
while costs continue to rise.
Despite
the problems facing subpostmasters, I believe that both the Post Office and the
NFSP will survive and thrive as a smaller network with subpostmasters supported
by an innovative and effective Federation.
My Mission
If
elected as General Secretary, the following are some of short and medium term
issues I want to focus on:
·
Providing proper support through the local consultation
process to those members with unviable offices selected for closure as a
result of the recent government announcement.
·
Ensuring that
those remaining have businesses that are viable, profitable and ultimately
saleable. This can only be achieved if subpostmasters receive a fairer share
of the income they generate for POL.
·
Redoubling
efforts through Government to get all banks to make their accounts accessible
at post offices and seeking the introduction of a range of
PO
branded banking products.
·
Dealing more
robustly with POL to improve fairness in how members are dealt with, not just
over pay but also with transactions such as Inland Revenue cash cheque fraud.
·
Working not
only to reverse the loss of Government business but also to attract more such
work, which in turn will mitigate the subsidy needed to keep a sizable network
intact.
·
Developing
additional income streams independent of POL but dovetailing into sub-post
offices.
My Profile
I have many
years experience as a subpostmaster, Branch Official, and Executive
Officer. I am a member of the NFSP Negotiating Committee, which
deals with our pay and conditions of service, and I am well known and
respected by senior Post Office management and Government ministers.
I
have a proven track record.
